THE
BILINGUAL ADVANTAGE
Raising
a bilingual child has many positive advantages to their development.
One main advantage to introducing a second language to a child early
in life is the enhanced brain development. Children learn any language
to which they are exposed. If you introduce a second language to
a children, they will not be language-delayed and will not be language-confused.
The child's brain is capable of assigning neurons to the sounds
of different languages, even in a child as young as 4 months of
age. Researchers at Dartmouth University discovered that early exposure
to a second language is better than later exposure (occurring after
6 years of age).
Being
bilingual gives children an advantage once they begin school. By
introducing a second language at an early age, research shows that
bilingual children have increased cognitive abilities, especially
in language. Other research on bilingual children suggests that
children who speak two or more languages have better logical reasoning,
mathematical and visual-spatial skills as well. Experts believe
that enhancing one cognitive area can influence development in other
cognitive areas. Other studies in child language acquisition have
shown that the language areas in the brain of bilingual children
were larger and more active than those of monolinguals.
It
is easy to give your child the bilingual advantage. Parents who
only know one language can introduce a second language by showing
bilingual programs, playing bilingual CDs and reading introductory
bilingual books. Introducing a second language to a child, even
if it is 50 words, will benefit. When and if the child begins formal
instruction of a second language, in elementary school or beyond,
the child will most likely speak without a dialect or accent.
